What is sea cucumber?

what is sea cucumber?

i saw it in the market, but i don't know what it is?

does anyone know how many calories it has?|||As you've already been told, it's a marine animal.

It's very tasty, and has a rubbery texture. I often have it when I go to a good Chinese seafood restaurant. There are several varieties, each with a different taste and texture.

I wouldn't try making it at home, though, unless you were quite accomplished at cooking Oriental seafood.

It's very low in calories. They consist mostly of water and collagen. 100 grams (4 oz) freshweight or reconstituted weight would contain about 40 calories.

Try eating it in a very good Chinese restaurant that is aimed at Chinese people. You probably won't find it in a restaurant aimed at Westerners.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!|||Holothuroidea are a class of marine animals (phylum Echinodermata) with an elongated body and leathery skin, which is found on the sea floor worldwide. Many holothurian species and genera, informally known as sea cucumbers, are targeted for human consumption. The harvested product is also known as trepang, b锚che-de-mer, balate, or sea slug. The body contains a single, branched gonad. Like all echinoderms, sea cucumbers have an endoskeleton just below the skin, calcified structures that are usually reduced to isolated microscopic ossicles (or sclerietes) joined by connective tissue. These can sometimes be enlarged to flattened plates, forming an armour. In pelagic species such as Pelagothuria natatrix (Order Elasipodida, family Pelagothuriidae), the skeleton and a calcareous ring are absent[1][2].|||It's a mollusk I think, like an octopus or squid, but they live in the sea, feeding off sediment. I would think they have low calories, but probably taste like nothing and are rubbery. They are eaten with sushi most the time.|||It's not a vegetable if that's what you mean. It's an animal, a kind of wormy looking thing. It's also referred to as a sea slug.

As for the calories though, I have no idea.|||It's an Echinoderm, related to starfish and sea urchins. They dry them and sell them as beche-de mer.

Very well thought of in SE Asia.

Virtually no calories.|||Yes, it is some kind of sea creature! I have had it in Korean restaurants and I love it!|||Its a tube like animal that lives underwater.... I wouldn't suggest buying one to eat...
