If coral was/is edible, could vegans eat it without remorse?

Also, do vegans eat sea urchin or sea cucumber? They're all "animals"|||I can't give a blanket statement including all vegans regarding feeling remorse, but sea cucumbers, coral and sea urchins are not part of a Vegan diet.

And you CAN eat coral - coral calcium is a top selling supplement.|||Corals are actually related to Jellyfish (they are both cnidarians) so they would be animals. Corals are also symbiotic in that they contain microscopic algae that the jellyfish part feeds on. Sea urchins and sea cucumbers are both echinoderms and are related to sea stars.

Parrot fish are one of the few animals that eat coral. Their poop eventual ends up as white sand beaches.

Both Sea Urchins and Cucumbers are popular in Asian cuisine. Sea cucumbers have been overharvested in some areas to the point they were almost wiped out. This includes the Galapagos Islands:

What kind of strange or cultural food do you want to try?

I LOVE Bizarre Foods: with Andrew Zimmern and sometimes i wish I had the honor of eating strange foods...

I kinda want to try the seasoned sea cucumber and fried crickets. lol.|||Hey! I watch Andrew Zimmern too! (I've had beef tongue before once or twice in a burrito; delicious).

I'm willing to try anything... maybe chicken myself into smelly, disgusting durian fruit like Mr. Zimmern couldn't stomach down.|||Hi: Rattlesnake is good. (don't eat Python, it tastes like rubber bands) The best steak I ever ate was Yak steak. Happy hunting!|||While I have not tried fried crickets, I've tried sea cucumber before in Chinese restaurants in Seoul and Honolulu. Its jelly-like flesh is rather bland and takes up other flavors from the dish they are served in. That reminded me that I've also tried Jellyfish too. I would would like to try Fugu. Fugu is a poisonous puffer fish which the flesh needs to be carefully prepared by a licensed/certified sushi chef or it would be your last meal.|||Ugh. Andrew Zimmern almost always talks about meat. (I'm not a vegetarian or anything, but still..)

I would like to try....

Dragonfruit- I've actually never had it before, although I have had persimmons (north american native and asian), passionfruit, oranges, bananas, ect.

KFC- it seems to represent "America", right? Apparently it tastes good..

Kombumaki-It looks so cute! lol..

and..maybe injera. it looks interesting

But I am of course open to anything. :D

Natto is surprisingly...tolerable.

We now keep a jar of homemade kimchi in our fridge.

Eating locusts is an (almost) annual tradition.

Whole wheat chapati is a typical item on our grocery list.

I made stuffed grape leaves (dolmas) just a few days ago.

etc etc etc

:D:D:D:D|||Have you tried all local restaurants yet? Many "strange" foods were a lot more readily available than you'd expect. You could find many interesting fruits in China Town. Durian, jackfruit, mangosteen, dragon fruit, cherimoya, lichee, and star fruit are not that hard to find at all.

Sea cucumber - You could find sea cucumber in a lot of Chinese and Korean places. Korean style tend to use small, chewy pieces more frequently; those tasted pretty bland. Chinese style tend to use softer, bigger pieces. At some places, you could find whole, braised sea cucumber. May I recommend braised sea cucumber with shrimp roe. :)

Vietnamese:

Balut - You won't find this in restaurants but you could find them in some asian markets. Look for duck eggs. The most expensive duck egg (around $1 to $2 a piece) is balut. They steam balut. Vietnamese said it is very tasty and it is very good for your skin. They also said it will increase a male's "potency". I got access to those more than twice but I chickened out every time. LOL

Raw beef - They wrap sliced raw beef and put raw garlic and/or raw chili on top. Those looked pretty cute (pink in color). I thought they were some kind of salty/spicy mochi when I first saw them. LOL

Braised catfish with pork - This one looks and sounds very innocent. It is relatively easy to find at Vietnamese fast food places and many Vietnamese love it. It tasted... scary. (I think they lied when they said catfish. LOL)

Pho with beef on the side - This is about the beef on the side of course. Many vietnamese put raw onion and basil leaf on raw slices of beef and eat them raw. You squeeze some lime juice and dip beef in hoisin sauce and chili sauce mix. Black peppers - optional. Not that bad at all.

Vietnamese sandwich - The cheapest cold cut contained head cheese with a lot of pork ears. :)

Hot and sour eel hot pot soup - When the soup start to boil, those eel pieces will move around as if they were "swimming" inside the pot... LOL

Japanese:

Ika - raw squid. Chewy and a "little" slimy.

Quail egg (raw) gunkan sushi.

Tororo cold soba - the dipping sauce was made out of grated nagaimo yam; it tasted like mucus!

Natto - Fermented soy beans with a POTENT smell and they are sticky.

Yaki-onigiri - Ever tried BBQ'ed. BBQ'ed/grilled rice balls?

Not so "weird" Japanese food:

Beef tataki - This is very raw seared beef. Some call it beef sashimi. Tasty stuff.

Uni - Sea urchin. It got a very soft texture and it got a unique smell. I like uni.

Ikura - Raw salmon eggs/roe. Those things pop inside your mouth and squirt you with fishy slime.

Korean:

Raw octopus - Less chewy than raw squid but it is very slimy.

Raw dried squid - This one doesn't taste like squid at all. Very tasty actually.

Raw beef - Raw beef with Korean pears. Very tasty.

Raw stingray/skate - Flesh is very soft. Cartlidge is a little chewy and crunchy. This dish is very spicy.

Chinese:

Duck tongue, duck feet, pork intestines, pork small intestines (this one is a little crunchy), chicken/duck gizzards, chicken/duck hearts, pork heart, pork maw (stomach), jelly fish, duck heads and pig heads. (Guess what could be found in those heads? Brains.) Pork blood with mixed beef offals (some contained beef lung) is pretty tasty. I don't like that pork blood too much though. Most if not all above list items could be found at a regular Cantonese Chinese BBQ duck/char siu place. The psychological effects from those foods will bother you more. They really don't taste as offensive as it sounds. Some places serve deep fried braised pork intestines with plum sauce or sweet and sour sauce on the side. It is soft and chewy inside and crispy on the outside. Good ones will taste like crispy duck with a weird twist. I can't say all of them are good but the good ones are excellent. Chinese also eat eels. Shanghai stir-fried eels are very good; some places serve those on top of a heated iron plate.

North America (many of them are hard to find):

Grizzly steak - Try not to eat grizzly fat because it got a pretty potent smell.

Alligators - It didn't taste as special as I expected.

Rabbits - Yum!

Squirrels - Tasted somewhat similar to venison. Yum!

Menudo - Mexican beef offal soup.

Tacos: lengua - beef tongue, seso - cow brains, buche - pork stomach (some said buche is esophagus; I think they are wrong.), cabeza - meats from a cow's head. Most of them tasted pretty good.

Foods I've not tried (but wanted to try) in North America:

Pickled pig feet/ears/tails - I've seen those pretty frequently but they usually come in pretty sizable jars. I'd have tried them if they came in smaller jars. LOL

Deep fried testicles - I do not have the balls to try them yet.

Opossums, skunks, nutria and snapping turtles were said to be VERY tasty.

The strange/weird foods I wanted to try are actually American foods. LOL

PS: You could find all Asian dishes and most other foods listed in Canada. :)

Sea cucumbers?

Is it true that if a person with diabetes eats sea cucumbers, their sugar will drop? if so, are there any negative side effects that come along with eating sea cucumbers? (such as herat failrue or increased chance for cancer? )|||i have heard that sea cucumbers do have nutritional value, how specific it is to diabetics i dont know. my family has had sea cucumbers quite often and we have yet to see any side effects. some people are allergic to it.|||I think it's nonsense but I'm sure it won't hurt you. If it works...shazzzammm! but I wouldn't hold my breath. If it were really a cure or a serious treatment it would be all over the news...good luck

What is the sea cucumbers adaptive morphology?

It has coloring that helps it blend in with its surroundings and it looks like a plant

What is the weirdest animal you have ever eaten?

The weirdest animals I've eaten are dog, frog, goat, and sea cucumber.|||I'm a Malaysian currently residing in Australia but I've been to China so here's a list of what weird things I tried in each country:

China

Fish Lips (Yeah I know it's fish, but a dish just consisting of lips??) disgusting %26amp; jelly-like.

Monkey Brain - Surprisingly it's tasteless! Just try to forget they've whacked off the top part of the head of a screaming monkey and you're scooping the brains out and putting it in your mouth. anyway, I could only get a spoonful down my throat, and did it asap, so at least I think it was tasteless.

Malaysia

shark meat - you can buy at any fish market, pretty tasty when fried with ginger and black bean sauce.

sago worms - They're actually big fat beetle larvae that can only be found in 'sago' trees. They're eaten alive (still squirming) **warning - bite off the head first though! taste? cannot describe it, but it's quite disgusting really but it's a delicacy, and they can be roasted too. too bad I got to try the alive ones. ugh..

dog - didn't realised what it was. when my friends started giggling when I happily ate it, I was suspicious. when they told me much much later, I was shocked. *sorry poor doggy** tastes like beef, or veal.

sea cucumber - braised with abalone. ewww... tasteless, but jelly-like and disgusting, albeit tasteless.

crocodile - again, was tricked by my parents. apparently, it's good for circulation etc etc blah blah. otherwise, tastes pretty much like chicken.

Frogs' Legs - Fried, usually as an appetiser or entree. It's ok, tastes like lean chicken.

sea urchin - disgusting, really. tastes fishy (in a bad way), oyster-ly (i know it's not a word, just trying to describe it).

jellyfish - as an entree, served cold, with sesame oil, lime juice, chilli and red onion. yum yumm......

snake's blood - this is particularly nasty. it's actually downright horrible. apparently good for blood circulation and a host of other ailments. not too sure it's true though.

camel kebabs - it's nice, tastes like chicken nothing special, though

Australia

emu steaks - pretty much like beef, just a little difference in taste and texture

kangaroo steaks - can be mistaken as normal sirlion steaks!

there are some others, but not very special though like rabbit and mutton kebabs, ostrich steaks, and shark fin. all quite nice. but still, I prefer my chicken.=D|||I drank the worm out of a mezcal bottle. and beef tongue tacos.|||Camel, escargot (love 'em), goat.|||I ate "jellyfish" a few years ago in a dimsun restaurant in Anaheim, CA! but I have tried dog, grasshoppers and spiders (yeah yeah, insects but still strange)...

Who knows, I've eaten some weird things in weird countries, you dont always know whats in front of you.|||frog! eww and i will never eat it again! it tastes gross!|||I ate kangaroo burgers, and in the miltary we had to eat insects for survival training... But none of that was as bad as eating sea slugs... I saw it on fear factor and got drunk one night and my friends dared me to try it, we went to the beach and he grilled it up,,, it wasn't worth the twenty dollars i got cause i wa sick for a week after.

ok, you girls win this round, I've eaten odd things but you all seem to have eaten some strange things. I can't even think where you'd get a cow's brain at in the supermarket. although i had mountain oysters, that wasn't bad, it was a snack in my mom's mart of mississippi.|||reindeer. Turkey nuts (yes, it's what is sounds like).|||iguana on a stick in cuba|||Deer and alligator|||snapping turtle and road-kill woodchuck!! (My uncle saw it killed and scooped 'er up!! Good stuff on kabobs!) By the way, goat is not a wierd food!

Do sea cucumbers taste like regular cucumbers or are they just more squishy when you slice them up?

for sandwiches|||they actually taste like chicken and hve the consistency of eggs|||One is an animal, the other one is a vegetable.|||You're joking right?

Is it ok to eat seafood if you are a vegetarian?

I like my vegetarian sushi wrapped in seaweed. I enjoy sea salt on my Sea orach salads. I also enjoy sea cucumber.|||I eat some seafood. I've been a vegetarian since I was 3. I just don't like the taste/texture of meat related products. There are alot of fish I don't eat either. I only like crab and shrimp and clams if they are fried. I only eat tilapia for fish. But mine is a texture/taste issue. I'm probably not "official" as a vegetarian. No idea. I'm just me!|||i think so but its up to you...|||It's fine as long as the seafood doesn't include meat from the ocean. Like tuna, octopus, roe eggs..etc.|||Sea vegetables are fine. Sea critters are generally not eaten by vegetarians. Since a sea cucumber is a type of fish, a vegetarian would not eat it.

~Morg~|||No if you mean the traditional definition of seafood - which is sea animals. Seaweed and sea salt are fine.|||lol, yeppers thats totally ok. I love those "seafoods" too! I also like sea asparagus, wakame, and kame. I think I will stick to a seafood diet! I wonder how many will misinterpret the question? Be prepared to get told NO-VEGETARIANS DONT EAT FISH, LOL|||Seaweed is a vegetable, not an animal. So it's OK.

Sea salt is a mineral, not an animal. It's OK.

Sea cucumber is an animal. It's not vegetarian.|||It depends on what your definition of "seafood" is. If you like eating seaweed salad (found at Japanese restaurants), seaweed soup (Chinese restaurants), or nori-wrapped sushi, then you're not eating non-vegetarian food.

However, if you eat fish, shrimp, oysters, etc., then that isn't part of a vegetarian diet.

By the way, were you aware that despite their name, sea cucumbers are animals, not vegetables?|||What's a sea orach?

Anyway a sea cucumber is an animal, so that's not vegetarian. Seaweed and other sea plants are fine.|||What do you mean by, "Is it OK?" If what you are asking is, "Will it kill me?," I somehow don't think so. And if it would kill you, then what's the point of being a vegetarian? We omnivores eat plenty of seafood and go on living as usual.|||Well in my opinion a true vegetarian doesn't eat any animal what so ever, but that's just me. So if you want to eat seafood then go ahead.|||Vegetarians don't eat animals. Sea salt is ok....the other two things sound just GROSS!!! Even a meat eater wouldn't eat them.|||Sea animals are still meat, so I don't consider them to be vegetarian foods. However, some people call themselves vegetarian even though they eat fish and stuff.|||What you can eat depends on what type of Vegetarian you are. The main types are listed below. Some people call themselves Veggie's if they eat fish, but this is not the case, as you can see below. If Vegetarians do eat eggs, they usually use free-range eggs. Those that eat cheese will only eat Vegetarian Cheese, as some cheeses are made using rennet from a cow's stomach. More and more cheeses are using a Vegetarian alternative to this. I personally am a Octo-Lacto Vegetarian. Congrats on your decision to be a vegetarian. Not only are you saving animals you are greatly improving your health. Bravo!

Octo-Lacto Vegetarian (The most popular definition, also known as Ovo-Lacto)

Vegetarians eat no red meat, poultry, fish, or products that have ingredients which are animal-based such as Gelatine. They do eat Vegetarian cheese, yoghurt, milk, eggs, honey etc. They also don't wear leather or fur.

Lacto Vegetarian

Lactose-Vegetarians do not eat any foods that involve the slaughter of animals. They don't eat eggs, but do eat Vegetarian cheese, yoghurt, and milk.

Vegan

Vegans do not eat the same things as vegetarians but also will not eat any product that is derived from animals. No meat, cheese, butter, milk, eggs or honey.

Demi-Vegetarian (commonly misinterpreted as Vegetarian by meat-eaters)

Demi-Vegetarians don't eat red meat or poultry, but they do eat fish, eggs, Vegetarian cheese, and milk-based products. This is not true Vegetarianism, although it is probably easiest for those just starting to become Veggie.

Fruitarian

A Fruitarian is somebody who believes that you should not kill any living thing to survive. Instead, they can only eat the fruit of plants that don't actually mean death to the plant. This is actually true believe it or not!

For more info on vegetarianism, how your helping your health and the animals, check out peta.org.|||No. The seaweed is okay because it is a plant. However, a sea cucumber is actually an animal. Vegetarians do not eat animals!|||Seaweed is not seafood its a plant :)|||So your eating sea vegetables? Cool.

P.S. your picture scares me.|||If the sea-creature is an animal I would think that a vegetarian would never eat it, but some people think that fish don't count and eat them anyway. Plants such as seaweed, sea orach and sea cucumber would not count as anti-vegetarian. Meats and fish are a no-no....plants are a go-go.|||Go away, troll. You don't even know what a sea cucumber is ...

Does anyone know what is the history for sea cucumbers?

please reply today......|||I think your question needs to be answered in the "zoology" category, beings a sea cucumber is a dweller of the marine environment..

...Added Info: Well, we replied yesterday as directed, now what? ...May I request that the "asker" respond back today with a choice!!..lol

**Billy Ray**|||Do sea cucumbers have a history? I didn't know they could write.|||They are an ancient animal that lives in the ocean. Sex involves penis fencing.

What animal is able to make itself a vegetable by eating it's own brain?

I know a certain animal exists like this, but I need to find the exact animal. I'm not talking about the scientific name or anything, but at first I thought it was a sea cucumber, but then researched and found sea cucumbers have no brains...*grins* But I THINK it's a sea animal. So, can anyone help me out?|||i think you might be thinking of a tunicate (sea squirt). they start off as a tadpole-like larva, then plant their heads in the ground once they've found a good spot. after that, their brains and other organs degenerate and for the rest of their lives, they mindlessly siphon water for nutrients. they're actually chordates (like humans), believe it or not. it's only obvious in their larval state though.|||It maybe a starfish, jellyfish or a kind of animal(anything) that has a soft body, mostly invertebrate|||How can someting eat it's own brain???|||I have searched and searched, can't find anything on that.|||#4 has the correct answer, but I just wanted to add I know a lot of people like that too!! :-) I think it comes from watching daytime TV

Most seafood except for fish has high cholesterol. Is it the good or bad cholesterol?

What about abolone? Does it contain any cholesterol at all

Sea cucumber has been said to be able to lower cholesterol if eaten, is it true?|||The good and bad cholesterol does not come from the food, but is made in our own bodies. It is recommended that total cholesterol levels be below 200 mg/dl (that's 200 milligrams per 100 ml of blood). The cholesterol doesn't just float freely in the bloodstream; it is attached to proteins called lipoproteins. There are three important classes of lipoproteins: HDL, LDL and VLDL.

The "bad" cholesterol is low-density lipopotein cholesterol, or LDL-C, and not all of the LDL-C is bad -- just the small particle LDL-C. It is considered desirable for the level of LDL-C to be below 130 mg/dl, but if a person has coronary artery disease or has had a heart attack, or has diabetes mellitus, the LDL-C level should be below 100 mg/dl and some experts are recommending levels of 70 or lower.

The so-called "good" cholesterol is high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or HDL-C. A level of 40 mg/dl or higher is desirable. Some say the higher, the better. Although some consider this category of cholesterol to be protective, all of the studies in reduction of heart disease consider only a reduction in LDL-C, so we have no real evidence that HDL-C has any protective effect.

The third category is very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or VLDL-C. This fraction consists of the relatively large light-weight cholesterol transporting particles, such as those carrying fat and cholesterol which has been absorbed from the intestine but not yet processed by the liver. The VLDL-C is neither protective nor harmful, and so levels of VLDL-C do not matter.

These three classes were identified by using an ultracentrifuge on samples of serum to separate the components in the serum, but measurement is at present done using easier and faster methods.|||Don't know about sea cucumber.

Fish oil in general, salmon oil particularly, is especially good for reducing cholesterol. It's what my doctor has instructed me to take.|||yes lt can be high in cholesterol.|||neverheard of that|||is it the good or bad cholesterol is not the most important thing, the most important thing is how you deal with it, I mean, even though it is a good cholesterol, it may be dangerous if you take too many cholesterol, and vice-versa, even though it is a bad cholesterol, if you just take a little bit of it, it will be OK|||good if you are non veggie bad if you r veggie depend upon situation

What types of sea creatures are any of these? (theyre from thailand)?

if you can identify any that would be great .... is that just a sea cucumber? i have no idea

http://tinypic.com/r/kbc6lj/7|||The bottom photo is a Scorpion fish. How do you know they're from Thailand ? The photo's give no indication of location. May be you already know the names of the fish ?|||Yeah, a sea cucumber. There's also a lion fish and maybe the other is a rock fish, but not 100% sure.

How do I make a dichotomous key out of these 9 animals?

I need to make a dichotomous key of these 9 animals: sea urchin, sea cucumber, brittle star, bony fish, dogfish shark, lizard, toad, chicken and pig. I can't start with a vertebrate-invertebrate grouping because according to my teacher, it's been overused now. I've been thinking of grouping them into endotherms and ectotherms, but I'm stuck there. Please help me.|||Of course you know there are an infinite number of ways to do this, right? The object is to divide them into two groups, then subdivide each group until you isolate each creature. You could use things like the presence of lungs in the adult, scales, bilateral and/or radial symmetry, circulatory system. You have a great idea for a start, so go do it. Good luck.|||Tell your teacher to stick his/her opinions where the sun don't shine. The vert./invert. dichotomy is "overused" because it is the natural one. If you don't want to do that (or do want to pass the class), why not divide them into whether they are aquatic or terrestrial as adults? Then you can separate out the echinoderms from the fishes on the basis of symmetry (radial vs bilateral). Or just start with symmetry.

Before we even slithered out of the sea, we still adored bacon. Our distant ancestors raised vast herds of Sea Pigs for their tasty meat and would grill them over volcanic vents on the ocean floor. However, beings made of primordial ooze not understanding that grilling foods on dry land was much different than cooking it over an undersea volcanic vent, left their herds behind during the Great Dry Land Migration and brought only their favorite meat, Sea Bacon, which they promptly burned. Since they'd never actually burned anything before, they thought that surely the Great God of Very Hot and Dry Things had cursed their favorite food! They all promptly switched to alegaeism (a diet still followed to some extent in Japan) and vowed never to eat a Sea Pig again in an attempt to appease this strange, frightening, powerful, Sea Bacon hating deity.

Without the constant pressure put on their population from slaughter for their sweet, tasty Sea Bacon-y goodness, the Sea Pigs thrived, though in a feral state. Their numbers are vastly decreased today because they are continuously caught up in nets by mistake. However, you will notice that even to this day we do not eat Sea Bacon from the Sea Pigs. Dactylochirotida

Dendrochirotida The sea cucumber is an echinoderm of the class Holothuroidea, with an elongated body and leathery skin. Mostly found on the sea floor. It is so named because of its cucumber-like shape.

Like all echinoderms, sea cucumbers have an endoskeleton just below the skin.

Sea cucumbers are generally scavengers, feeding on debris in the benthic layer. Their diet consist of plankton and other organic matter found in the sea. One way they might get a supply of food is to position themselves in a current where they can catch food that flow by with their tentacles when they open. Another way is to sift through the bottom sediments using their tentacles.

They have the peculiar adaptation of expelling first sticky threads, perhaps to incapacitate predators, and then their internal organs when startled by a potential predator. These organs can then be regrown.

Sea cucumbers reproduce by releasing sperm and ova into the ocean water. Depending on conditions, one organism can produce thousands of gametes.

Surprising as it may seem, sea cucumbers have inspired musical composition: in the first of his Erik Satie presents the "(desiccated embryo) of a Holothuroidean" and inserts a description of the animal in the score:

The Holothuroidean crawls across bolders and rocky surfaces.

This sea-animal purrs like a cat; also, it produces disgusting silky threads.

Light appears to have an incommodating effect on it.

Sea cucumbers have also inspired thousands of haiku in Japan, where they are called "namako." In haiku, they are usually called "sea slugs," for the sake of the sluggish metaphor, and there is a book with almost 1000 holothurian haiku translated from Japanese titled "Rise, Ye Sea Slugs!" by Robin D. Gill. According to the OED, the "sea slug" is a holothurian first, but biologists insist on using "sea slug" only for the nudibranch, a mollusc famous for its neat little brain. The sea-cucumber itself does not mind either way, for it is famous for having no brain whatsoever, not even the start of a ganglia. The Japanese scientist-author Motokawa Tatsuo of TIT describes the sea cucumber as the opposite of us humans: We have brains and are made of dumb material, while they, lacking brains boast smart material.

The sea cucumber's closest relatives (the echinoidea) get more attention from scientists, both as embryos and as fossils.

Sea cucumber is one of the most unique foodstuffs in Chinese cuisine. It is highly valued for its supposed medicinal properties. The flesh of the animal is "cleaned" in a process that takes several days. The product is often purchased dried, and rehydrated before use. kingdom animalia

subphylum invertebrata

phylum echinodermata

class : - asteroidea: starfish

- holothuroidea: sea cucumbers

- echinoidea: sea cucumbers|||Echidnodermata|||Echinodermata|||Echinodermata|||Introduction

Echinoderm, common name for about 6000 living species constituting a phylum of marine animals, such as starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars, and sea cucumbers. They usually show a superficial five-part radial symmetry, and generally are equipped with peculiar tube feet. The phylum name is derived from the spiny skin.

The larval stages of this distinct and highly modified group are rather like those of the acorn worm, suggesting a relationship to chordate animals. In later development, however, the left side of the body grows at the expense of the right, and the adults are quite unlike any other animals.

Structure

An echinoderm such as the starfish typically has a mouth surrounded by five arms that bear minute, fleshy tube feet with which the animal clings and crawls. The tube feet are supported by a complex internal hydraulic system that is inflated with seawater. Some echinoderms, especially brittle stars, crawl or swim by moving their arms. Often, as in sea urchins, rows of tube feet extend along the body surface, and arms are absent. The spines are particularly well developed in sea urchins. The skeleton, made up of calcium carbonate, may form a large proportion of the body, or, as in some sea cucumbers, it may be greatly reduced. The fossil record shows that the five-rayed pattern is a late evolutionary acquisition, and deviations from it are common. The animals have a well-developed gut, but the nervous and circulatory systems are simple. Echinoderms are slow-moving and without complex behavior patterns.

Ecology

Echinoderms are common on the ocean bottom at all depths; in the deep sea they often make up the bulk of living material. They may be grazers (most sea urchins), feeders on small particles (many brittle stars), or predators (most starfish). Starfish and a few others are pests, as when found in oyster beds. Sea cucumbers and sea urchins are eaten by humans.

Scientific classification: Echinoderms make up the phylum Echinodermata. The living echinoderms are commonly divided into two subphyla. The stalked or attached Pelmatozoa consist of the single class Crinoidea, or sea lilies and feather stars, with 650 species. The free-living Eleutherozoa consist of the classes Holothuroidae, or sea cucumbers, with 900 species; Echinoidea, or sea urchins and sand dollars, with 850 species; Asteroidea, or starfish, with about 1500 species; and Ophiuroidea, or brittle stars, with about 2000 species. Many authorities, however, unite Asteroidea and Ophiuroidea into a single class, Asterozoa (or Stelleroidea). About 20 extinct classes are found in the fossil record.

Is it better to use sea salt or sugar for body scrub?

To keep my light, glowing skin color, I make a mixture of cucumber %26amp; lemon (blended), sandalwood essential oil, avocado oil, apricot oil, ground coffee beans, and fine sea salt. I know both can be used as exfoliants, but which one is better and why? Could I still use same other ingredients if I switched? Thank you!|||It depends on your skin type. If you have a more oily skin type use salt because salt helps decrease oilyness in skin. It is also considered more of an energizer. However I don't like sea salt because it burns any small but and it can be irritating. Raw sugar is better for dryer skin. Its not a moisterizer but it doesn't dry it out either. |||Adult sea cucumbers have five fold symmetry and an ambulacral vascular system, modified from the coelem. The ambulacral system runs in 5 longitudinal strips that power tube feet in some species. What is the history of trepanging for sea cucumbers?

Trepanging is comparable to clamming, crabbing, lobstering, musseling, shrimping and other forms of "fishing" whose goal is acquisition of edible invertebrates rather than finfish. Slow-moving creatures related to sea stars and sea urchins, sea cucumbers are found on the sea floor. As such, trepanging is accomplished by spearing, diving, dredging or simply picking the animals up by hand when they are exposed at low tide.

To supply the markets of Southern China, Muslim Makassar Indonesia trepangers traded with Indigenous Australians of Arnhem Land from at least the 18th century or likely prior. This Macassan contact with Australia is the first recorded example of interaction between the inhabitants of the Australian continent and their Asian neighbours. This contact had a major impact on the Indigenous Australians. The Makassar exchanged goods such as cloth, tobacco, knives, rice and alcohol for the right to trepang coastal waters and employ local labour. Makassar pidgin became a lingua franca along the north coast among different Indigenous Australian groups who were brought into greater contact with each other by the seafaring Macassan culture.

Archeological remains of Makasar contact include trepang processing plants from the 18th and 19th centuries are still be found at Australian locations such as Port Essington and Groote Eylandt, and the Makasar-planted tamarind trees (native to Madagascar and East Africa) introduced by the seafaring Muslims. .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trepanging

The Macassans were Indonesians from the trading center of Macassar in the southern Island Sulawesi in Java, which for centuries had been the outlet for the trepang trade with China. They came in fleets of boats called praus, which they used to collect this small sea animal. There is not sufficient evidence to make an accurate account of the time period these people had been coming to the northern shores of Australia. Some historians say fishermen were coming for hundreds of years - others say they arrived in the seventeenth century.

The demand for trepang to be brought into China did not emerge until the 1600s. Maritime expansion and commercial development by Islam and China spread throughout South East Asia into the Javanese archipelago. The city of Macassar was captured by the Dutch in 1669 and was established as a center for European trade and colonialism. Macassar began representing Dutch colonization outside Java.

The Macassans came to Australia to collect trepang and import it back to Macassar. From there they exported the trepang to China. Besides trepang, Macassans imported timber (iron-wood, cypress pine, sandalwood), pearl, pearlshell and tortoiseshell. Apart from Northen Australia, the main fishing grounds for trepang were all in the Indian and Western pacific Oceans.

Australian trepang made up the largest part of Macassan exports and of the total import into China. The trepang industry in Australia was large and well organized. Approximately 2 000 Macassans spent 4-5 months a year gathering trepang, which fetched considerable amounts of money for their financers in Macassar, and they enjoyed high social standing in the community. European businessman controlled commercial trading, while actual shipping to South China was handled by the Chinese businessman living in Macassar. Exporting of trepang from Macassar to China was handled from Singapore. Most voyages were financed and outfitted by merchants who supplied basic items like piculs, rice, kajang(awning mats made from palm leaves), ataps(similar mats made of nipa palm leaves), catties of rattan, palm-leaf sail cloth, iron pots for cooking, parring bamboo for building etc.

California Sea Hare- What kind of Skeleton does it have? Sea cucumbers, squid, and jellyfish too?

What kind of skeleton do they have? thanks soooo much.|||These don't really have skeletons. The squid has a "pen" which is made of calcium, but it's too small to support the body.

If I had to answer the question, I'd say that these creatures (all of them) have hydroskeletons -- fluid chambers which, when slightly pressurized, can provide some rigidity when/where needed.|||They don't have skeletons which is why they are called invertebrates. What do sea stars, sea cucumbers, and sea urchins have in common?

A. Long, sharp spines

B. Thick, fleshy tentacles

C. Long, spindly arms

D. A water vascular system with tube feet|||D

Tube feet are the many small tubular projections found most famously on the oral face of a sea star's arms, but are characteristic of the water vascular system of the echinoderm phylum which also includes sea urchins, sand dollars and sea cucumbers and many other sea creatures.

Tube feet function in locomotion and feeding. The tube feet in a sea star are arranged in grooves along the arms. They operate through hydraulic pressure. They are used to pass food to the oral mouth at the center, and can attach to surfaces. A sea star that is overturned simply turns one arm over and attaches it to a solid surface, and levers itself the right way up.|||D.

Echinoderms are characterized by radial symmetry, several arms (5 or more, mostly grouped 2 left - 1 middle - 2 right) radiating from a central body (= pentamerous). The body actually consists of five equal segments, each containing a duplicate set of various internal organs. They have no heart, brain, nor eyes, but some brittle stars seem to have light sensitive parts on their arms. Their mouth is situated on the underside and their anus on top (except feather stars, sea cucumbers and some urchins).

Echinoderms have tentacle-like structures called tube feet with suction pads situated at their extremities. These tube feet are hydraulically controlled by a remarkable vascular system. This system supplies water through canals of small muscular tubes to the tube feet (= ambulacral feet). As the tube feet press against a moving object, water is withdrawn from them, resulting in a suction effect. When water returns to the canals, suction is released. The resulting locomotion is generally very slow.|||A.

They are all part of Phyllum Echinodermata, meaning spined skin.|||In order to sort out between the different answers you get I would highly recommend to look at images of the various echinoderms you mention. If you know how they look like the answer will be obvious.|||D.|||B|||D is the answer......|||The word 'Sea'!

i choose A - long sharp spines|||they all live in the deep sea

thats my answer and i am sticking tooo it .

What do you know about sea cucumbers?

I have a science project about them.|||Sea cucumbers are echinoderms. Sea cucumbers are sausage shaped, and their skin is covered with warty bumps or soft spines. When threatened, cucumbers can contract their muscles and shoot out water from their body making them shorter, thicker, and harder. Some can even shoot out their insides and then go and grow new insides.

Sea cucumbers have hundreds of tiny suction-cup tube feet that they use to crawl across the sea floor. Three common sea cucumbers are the warty sea cucumber, the California cucumber, and the white star cucumber. Warty sea cucumbers are chestnut brown with black-tipped "warts" all over their bodies. Warty sea cucumbers grow up to ten inches long. California sea cucumbers are brown to reddish-brown and are covered with pointed, cone-shaped projections. The California sea cucumber grows up to sixteen inches long. The white sea cucumber is light orange to white with long, nonretractable spines covering their bodies. White sea cucumbers grow up to four inches long.

What is a sea cucumber?

It's a marine animal with an elongated body and a leathery skin that looks sort of like a giant slug. It has a skeleton of sorts, a support structure just beneath its skin.

Some varieties are edible, and are harvested for use in Chinese cuisine. Others are said to have regenerative properties, and the use of sea cucumber extract in tissue regeneration has been a subject of serious study recently.

Some interesting trivia: The collagen plates that make up its "skeleton" can be unhooked and reconnected at will. So a sea cucumber can literally liquefy it body to squeeze into a small space, and then reform to protect itself.

Also, several species can startle or entangle predators by literally squeezing their own guts out. (New ones grow back in 3-4 weeks.) This is known as "evisceration", and is sometimes accompanied by a toxic chemical that kills animals in the vicinity.|||It is a creature/animal that lives deep in the water.

Does sea cucumber reproduce asexually or sexually?

A few species of sea cucumber can reproduce asexually, most have separate sexes that release eggs and sperm into the water for fertilization. The larvae are often free-swimming and metamorphose into bottom dwelling adults. In some sea cucumbers species, the larvae stage is omitted and the newly hatch young resemble small adults.|||asexually. i dont know how i know this!|||Sexually. One part releases a cloud of eggs - another releases sperm. The two combine in the ocean. The fertilized eggs then settle in the coral reef or ocean floor. After a while, a new sea cucumber is born.

What is the "hair" of a sea cucumber called? Eight letters.?

T_ _ e _ e__

Help!!!!!!|||2 words (tube feet) Maybe some of your letters are wrong? tentacle

Sea cucumbers (Class Holothuroidea) are cylinder-shaped invertebrate animals that live in seas worldwide. They are found in a variety of sea floor habitats, from warm tropical waters to cold deep sea trenches. These nocturnal animals have a life span of about 5 to 10 years.

Anatomy: The body of the sea cucumber is elongated, leathery and muscular; spines are contained with the skin. These echinoderms have no arms, but do have five-part symmetry. Surrounding the mouth are 8 to 30 tentacles (modified tube feet). Five double rows of tube feet (with tiny suction cups) run along the body; they are used for crawling along the sea bed or anchoring to a rock. A sea cucumber breathes by pumping sea water in and out of an internal organ called a respiratory tree. Some sea cucumbers burrow into the sea floor. Sea cucumbers have no brain. The biggest sea cucumber, the tiger's tail sea cucumber (Holothuria thomasi), is about 2 m long - most sea cucumbers are much smaller than this.

Diet: Sea cucumbers eat decaying matter that floats in the water or is in the sand.

Enemies: Sea turtles, crustaceans, many fish, and people eat sea cucumbers. Sea cucumbers can expel most of their internal organs to confuse predators - they later regrows the organs. Some sea cucumbers' bodies contain toxins that can deter attackers.|||Is it TENTACLE?

It is so named because of its cucumber-like shape. Like all echinoderms, sea cucumbers have an endoskeleton just below the skin, but this can actually be absent in some species.[citation needed]

Overview

Sea cucumbers exist in a wide variety of appearances

Sea cucumber in Fiji

Sea cucumber in Mah茅, Seychelles ejects sticky filaments from the anus in self-defence.

A sea cucumber feeding while on gravelSea cucumbers are generally scavengers, feeding on debris in the benthic zone of the ocean. Exceptions include pelagic cucumbers and the species Rynkatropa pawsoni, which has a commensal relationship with deep-sea anglerfish.[1] The diet of most cucumbers consists of plankton and decaying organic matter found in the sea. Some sea cucumbers position themselves in currents and catch food that flows by with their open tentacles. They also sift through the bottom sediments using their tentacles.

Some species of coral-reef sea cucumbers within the order Aspidochirotida can defend themselves by expelling their sticky cuvierian tubules (enlargements of the respiratory tree that float freely in the coelom) to entangle potential predators. When startled, these cucumbers may expel some of them through a tear in the wall of the cloaca in an autotomic process known as evisceration. Replacement tubules grow back in one-and-a-half to five weeks, depending on the species.

They can be found in great numbers on the deep sea floor, where they often make up the majority of the animal biomass. The body of deep water holothurians is made of a tough gelatinous tissue with unique properties that makes the animals able to control their own buoyancy, making it possible for them to either live on the ocean floor or to float over it to move to new locations with a minimum of energy.[4]

In more shallow waters, sea cucumbers can form dense populations. The strawberry sea cucumber (Squamocnus brevidentis) of New Zealand lives on rocky walls around the southern coast of the South Island where populations sometimes reach densities of 1,000 animals per square metre. For this reason, one such area in Fiordland is simply called the strawberry fields.

Sea cucumbers extract oxygen from water in a pair of 'respiratory trees' that branch off the cloaca just inside the anus, so that they 'breathe' by drawing water in through the anus and then expelling it.A variety of fish, most commonly pearl fish, have evolved a commensalistic symbiotic relationship with sea cucumbers in which the pearl fish will live in sea cucumber's cloaca using it for protection from predation, a source of food (the nutrients passing in and out of the anus from the water), and to develop into their adult stage of life. Many polychaete worms and crabs have also specialized to use the cloacal respiratory trees for protection by living inside the sea cucumber.

Ten percent of the blood cell pigment of the sea cucumber is vanadium. Just as the horseshoe crab has blue blood rather than red blood (colored by iron in hemoglobin) because of copper in the hemocyanin pigment, the blood of the sea cucumber is yellow because of the vanadium in the vanabin pigment[9]. Nonetheless, there is no evidence that vanabins carry oxygen, in contrast to hemoglobin and hemocyanin.

Sea cucumbers reproduce by releasing sperm and ova into the ocean water. Depending on conditions, one organism can produce thousands of gametes.

The largest American species is Holothuria floridana, which abounds just below low-water mark on the Florida reefs.

The most common way to separate the subclasses is by looking at their oral tentacles. Subclass Dendrochirotacea has 8-30 oral tentacles, subclass Aspidochirotacea has 10-30 leaflike or shieldlike oral tentacles, while subclass Apodacea may have up to 25 simple or pinnate oral tentacles and is also characterized by reduced or absent tube feet, as in the order Apodida.[citation needed]

[edit] Sea cucumbers as food and medicine

Dried sea cucumbers in a Chinese pharmacy"To supply the markets of Southern China, Macassan trepangers traded with the Indigenous Australians of Arnhem Land. This Macassan contact with Australia is the first recorded example of trade between the inhabitants of the Australian continent and their Asian neighbours."

Some varieties of sea cucumber (known as gamat in Malaysia or trepang in Indonesia) are said to have excellent healing properties. There are pharmaceutical companies being built based on this gamat product. Extracts are prepared and made into oil, cream or cosmetics. Some products are intended to be taken internally. The effectiveness of sea cucumber extract in tissue repair has been the subject of serious study[10]. It is believed that the sea cucumber contains all the fatty acids necessary to play an active role in tissue repair.[11].

Sea cucumbers are believed to be endowed with aphrodisiac powers in the Far East. The reason for this belief is the peculiar reaction of the creature on being kneaded or disturbed slightly with fingers. It swells and stiffens and a jet of water is released from one end. This behaviour is similar to the erection and subsequent ejaculation of the male human penis. After releasing the jet which is a defensive mechanism and contains irritants the creature loses its stiffness and reverts to its original state.[citation needed]

On December 21, 2007, a study published in PLoS Pathogens found that a lectin from Cucumaria echinata impaired the development of the malaria parasite when produced by transgenic mosquitoes.[12].

[edit] Sea cucumbers in art

Sea cucumber (a - Tentacles, b - Cloaca, c - Ambulacral feet on the ventral side, d - Papillae on the back)Sea cucumbers have inspired musical composition: in the first of his Embryons dess茅ch茅s for piano solo, Erik Satie presents the "(Desiccated embryo) of a Holothurian" and inserts a description of the animal in the score:

The Holothurian crawls across boulders and rocky surfaces.

This sea-animal purrs like a cat; also, it produces disgusting silky threads.

Light appears to have an incommodating effect on it.

Nonetheless it is the sea cucumber's closest relative (the echinoidea or sea urchin) that gets the most attention from scientists, both as an embryo and as a fossil.

Sea cucumbers have also inspired thousands of haiku in Japan, where they are called namako (銉娿優銈?, written with characters that can be translated "sea mice". In English translations of these haiku, they are usually called "sea slugs"; according to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term "sea slug" originally referred to holothurians (in the 18th century), though biologists now use the name only for the nudibranch molluscs, marine relatives of land slugs. Almost 1,000 Japanese holothurian haiku translated into English appear in the book Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! by Robin D. Gill
